In the pursuit of creative nectar I've landed in Paris this past week. I'm here with designer and friend Jenny Sweeney exploring the Maison & Object lifestyle trade show and of course markets and streets of the city. But one of the most incredible highlights has been the family home of my friend, and lifelong Parisian, Celini Watkin. An incredible friend I made in Belize. Her home is the purest example of artful living I have ever seen. There are four floors and four different art studios in their home just outside of Paris in the Meudon neighborhood.
Celini's father is the well known and life-long sculptor at 94 years-old. This is his studio shown here. The windows are two stories high and I have never seen such a classical study. It is like a room that has stood still in time.
Her mother is a painter and there are classical portraits throughout the maze-like levels only each one is missing a face. Celini is a print maker, painter, photographer and jewelry designer who occupies a special flat in the home. But everything is mixed together throughout the home spanning two generations (nearly 100 years) and infused with bits of seventies wallpaper and the smell of old cigarette's burnt up
to the sound of reggae while Celini makes another African influenced painting. She herself is such an inspiration. She is literally dripping with African textiles, mexican embroidery, tibetan beads and parrot feathers! She has whipped us up seafood curries in minutes and sunny pastry breakfasts in the rogue garden with ease. To describe her eccentricities and beauty is difficult at best. Her and her family are a special glimpse into a special Parisian artist family. I'll be here a while longer still and have more to share from Paris soon...Aure voir.
