Papayariffic Challenge Mini-Update #3: First Submissions!

We are getting the first glimpses of peoples creative constructions, and it's more than a little exciting to see people's work.  I love the stories, the images of tea and oranges, the pictures of people's hands folding and cutting (no hands were cut). I'm going to post a couple of the images as a teaser, but please, please, please send your images in before November 1st to win that Tote Bag of your dreams.

Kime Buzelli, a fashion art fantasy

Filled with a passion for color, and a raw quality that I adore, L.A-based Kime Buzzelli's art combines her love for fashion, music, film, and make-believe. I found myself instantly drawn to her work, I love how she always adds wit with scribbled words like  "inside i'm dancing...outstanding".

In her own words: "layering images on heavy papers using watered down paints and markers. I fancy the parts in stories where something unusual happens, or is about to happen. I like filling in the blanks in a scene or deciding what may occur next. I'm attracted to mistakes in text. I heart mysteries and voyeurism."- Kime Buzelli

Her blog the moldy doily, is filled with her latest adventures in fashion, and most recently the transformation of her paintings into products like Urban Decay make-up, and Vans...  & being an (almost) native Southern Californian myself, keeping up with her enchanting writing about her life in Los Angeles always takes me home again.

A festive Debut

PaPaYa! is a design company, so naturally we get very excited when it comes time to unveil our latest images.  We have some new cards available in December, so I thought it would be fun to debut a couple of our more festive releases here on our blog.

"The Story Is Happening"

I managed to catch a few minutes with Sabrina yesterday as she was headed out the door (and out of the country) for her "Spill with Sabrina in Mexico" Retreat. I wanted to talk to her about her short "The Story is Happening", a video collaboration with Jan Michillini. The film was shot in Italy and New York City and is a beautiful moving collage set to a beautiful song called "Left Luggage" (by Australian artist Simon Pressmen, vocals by Jodie Sage). Katie Carpenter masterfully edited the film and discusses the process in her blog. I sat down with Sabrina in the design room while we watched the newest hi def version of the video hot off the presses. I got goosebumps as I experienced a beautiful blend of rich sounds and vibrant imagery. One of my favorite things about Sabrina's work, also noted by Katie Carpenter, is the way Sabrina honers people she has known throughout her life by presenting them as art themselves.

Planning Ahead...

Well acording to the Mayans 2012 is the end of days- or something like that.  But here at PAPAYA! we are working years ahead regardless of what the mystics may have said!  And lets just hope they are wrong because our coming calendars are going to be so cute.  And if they're right you can go out like a rockstar with our 2011 wall calendars.

With a slightly more hand made feel these calendars feature more painted textures and beautiful vintage snippets.  Of course glitter is part of the deal and you'll get it on every page!  Since the designs where just finished we're excited about them early.  Unfortunately the artsy buns we cook up take about 4 months in the oven (if you're an early planner).  But we have oodles of lovely calendars already available for 2010.  

Artist Inspiration: Sophie Adde

French artist, Sophie Adde's paintings first caught my eye a few years ago through the colorful collection of images on flickr of eclectic gipsyland...  Her images really get my creative juices flowing. I adore her exuberant sense of color, beautiful subject matter, and sublime layering of papers. 

This September Anahata, brought home some postcards of her artwork for me from her recent trip to Paris, and the enchantment I felt with her work was instantly rekindled.

PaPaYa! gets some love from a Modern Family

Last Wednesday PaPaYa! got a little bit of love from ABC and their new hit show Modern Family.  I snapped a few stills from the scene in which the lovable little teenager covers her wall with PaPaYa Giclees and Art Panels.

Sorry I know the pics are a bit grainy, the stills were taken from the ABC website.  On her back wall you can see the "Blue Bell" large Giclee,  "Sweet Surrender" small Giclee, and one of Sabrina Ward Harrison's "Adventure" Art Panels

In this shot they chose "Caribbean Woman" Giclee  and the Art Panel prints "Believe" and "Sweet Surrender".
