Since all of our products are essentially designed digitally on a computer, I always work in a way that also includes it's 3-dimensional counterpart. My latest "baby" is a 200 page book, that is both a date planner and journal. My intent was to make it inspirational, functional, and beautiful. To visualize this, along the way I printed every page, and sorted them out visually in the order I wanted them by hand.
The pages line my walls clipped on ribbons, pinned to cork board, & sometimes layed out in grids on my floor. I also began a handwritten journal, filling it with quotes that moved me, to incorporate into the designs. If I noticed that something needed a bit more or less after it was printed, I'd go back and re-work the image until it felt just right.
I love to build mock-ups of every product before it goes to press. My ex-acto knife, glue, and self-healing cutting mat
have become just as important as Photoshop. It's always exciting
getting to show my co-workers what's happening visually with a products
development this way too.
Months in the making, I've had pure creative pleasure in this books development. It's now ready for pre-press and then time to push it out the door to the factory. Very exciting... although I think I'll leave it's pages decorating my walls just a bit longer, it's my "baby" after all!

I love how you describe your process. I love how you move between digital and tactile. It's always so interesting to me to see how designers work. Organizing this process is so challenging for me. Thanks for the inspiration!!! I love your new office!
